Basic Information:

  • The civilization was formed from many clans joining together
  • It was formed sometime between 2000 and 1000 years ago
  • They were a warlike tribe who conquered many smaller tribes
  • It is thought that they may have conquered the Tiahuanaco (Tiwanaku) Civilization
  • Its central city was Tiahuanaco (Tiwanaku)
  • It was made up of city-states; the two largest were the Colla and Lupaca
  • They lived (and currently live) around Lake Titicaca south to Lake Poopo (yes, this is a real lake)
  • They speak Aymara
  • They influenced, and were influenced by the Incas
  • They were taken over by the incas during the Inca leader Huaynca Capac's reign (between 1450 and 1550)
  • The political leaders were families called "ayllu"
  • They were conquered, along with the incas, by the Spanish
  • Many were converted to Catholocism
